The Best Beer Commercials – Guinness

Guinness is of course an Irish drink so why, you ask, is it not included in a category entitled the Best Beer Commercials – Ireland.  Well it would be easy to do of course but when you’re only singling out four or five ads where do you start?  Guinness has a history of producing stunning and innovative commercials and don’t forget there are also plenty of other beer manufacturers in Ireland – North and South – which deserve a mention.  So.  Guinness gets its own category.

To begin with, quite possibly the most famous beer commercial ever, let alone Guinness’s most well known one.  The concept of much Guiness advertising revolves around patience and the best things coming to to those who wait – in this case the perfect wave combined with a great Leftfield soundtrack.

Some of the imagery used by the company is just spectacular.  While the links to the actual drinking of beer may get more and more tenuous,you just can’t argue with the feature film level of production quality.

This next one’s actually a user-submitted ad and not from Guinness (as far as I’m aware).  This almost certainly wouldn’t have aired on any channel anywhere in the world.  Funny though, and good quality.  Viral, you might say.

One more now again on the subject of good things coming to those who wait.  The adverts themselves seem almost timeless and when you watch them now it’s as if you were watching them on TV just yesterday.  This is the legendary swimmer ad.

Amazingly this one is from way back in 1994 but there’s no way it seems like that – the timeless quality of the ad would mean it would sit nicely amongst today’s crop of beer commercials – 17 years on.  This is the iconic dancing man ad.

The Best Beer Commercials – Russia

Back to our occasional look at some of the world’s best beer commercials and we’ll move a long way North this time, to the largest country in the world and one which has an appetite for alcohol.  Unfortunately for us it’s an appetite for vodka which keeps them warm on these extremely long winter nights but they do also drink beers such as Baltika and Ochakovo and for our first ad – Stolichnoye.

Fans will recognise it as a classic of the genre, the girl spends hours making herself look fantastic and trying on a variety of different outfits in the process before it all goes wrong when………..well check it out for yourself:

A fairly gentle one next and you can’t help thinking that if this ad was made in some other country there would have been some sort of surprise ending – like the girl would have turned out to be a bloke or something but it’s a good’un anyway.  It’s for Lidski Kvas beer.

I’ve included the next one for the last scene as much as anything else – it’s a standard photographers-taking-pictures-of-the-pretty-girl-but-in-fact-they’re-snapping-the-beer type ad.  All well and good so far, but then she jumps in her car while still waving her bottle around.  Do the Russians encourage drink driving?  Is it a light beer? Who knows?  Can’t see that scene happening in many other countries though.

One last one then and this ones from Baltika. It’s always a shame when a Russian ad doesn’t feature a girl prominently – they’re all so damn good looking- but this is a quality one anyway.  It even features pool and funky last shot which prompts the drinking of beer.  Baltikas all round!

The Best Beer Commercials – Canada

Let’s leave Europe for the time being and head back to North America for this post, specifically let’s go to Canada and check out what the imaginative advertising agencies have cooked up for us there in recent years.  The beer industry is mostly dominated by the giant Molson and Labatts breweries so their going to feature pretty heavily.

The first one is the type of ad you only get in young, smallish, usually ex-colonial countries such as Canada and Australia and to me in always seems to demonstrate a touch of identity crisis.  I can’t imagine any of the old-world, European countries producing an ad like this but have a look yourself:

If I’m going to be honest I’ve really got no idea what this next ones about.  It’s got some beer at the end (Molson’s), a bit of sport mentioned at the beginning and most importantly some girls in the middle but I don’t get the message, but then I’m not Canadian.

This next one I like if only for the way the truck owner briefly slips on the balls after they come pouring out of this car.  A genuine laughing soundtrack is always good too and as with so many beer ads there’s really very little connection with the product and the action except that maybe if you were drunk you would pull a stunt like this:

The Best Beer Commercials – UK

For as long as beer has been sold and advertising has  been available, beer companies have devised ingenious ways to help you part with your money.  Most ads are amusing, some include pretty ladies, some include both.  This of course suggests that the commercials are targeted towards men and almost without exception they are.  But they’re still funny so let’s have a look at some of the best starting with the U.K’s offerings.

The first is for Boddington’s beer – originally a small Manchester brewery, but transformed into a national distributor around the same time as this ad was produced in the early 1990′s. Witness the pretentious background juxtaposed with the Manchester accent, classic.

The next one is for John Smiths bitter, a regulation ale also from the north of England.  It features comic Peter Kaye and is a great representation of Saturday/Sunday league football. The phrase “‘ave it” quickly became a catchphrase and not just in the playground.

Now this next one could well be one of the world’s best ever beer commercials.  It’s got everything – patriotism (possibly nationalism), historical dambusters references, anti-German humour, stereotypes and a low key ending.  Superb.

Okay, one more then and an ad of the viral variety.  This certainly would not get shown on TV.
